Ireland Itinerary - MIKE BLAKELY 2011 TOUR
September 10-18, 2011
DAY 1 – Saturday, September 10: Destination Ireland: The adventure begins with an overnight flight to the enchanted “Emerald Isle.” Dinner and a light breakfast are served onboard before an early arrival in Shannon.
DAY 2 – Sunday, September 11: Upon arrival in Shannon, we meet our Irish Coach driver and experienced Tour Guide. Our first destination is the charming town of Limerick. On our guided bus tour on our way to Killarney, we will see Kings Island, first settled by the Vikings and the heart of medieval Limerick. The island boasts Limerick’s two main landmarks: King John’s Castle, dating from the year 1200, and St. Mary’s Cathedral, built in 1172 and the oldest structure in the city. We will also see St. John’s Cathedral in the Old Irishtown Section. Its imposing 280 foot spire is the tallest in the country. We will have coffee in the picturesque village of Adare on our short journey to Killarney. The afternoon will be yours to relax or to explore. We will be staying in Killarney for the next 3 nights. We will dine as a group tonight in the hotel.
Day 3 – Monday, September 12: Our stay in Killarney allows us to explore the majestic beauty and historic sites of County Kerry and County Cork. This morning we depart on a spectacular 100 mile journey around the “Ring of Kerry”. We will experience breathtaking seascapes, gently rolling hills, quaint Irish villages, high mountain passes, beautiful lakes and streams, and every shade of green that exists! We will make stops at the fascinating Bog Village, the coastal village of Waterville, spectacular Cookmakista Pass, the charming village of Sneem, Moll’s Gap, and the Lakes of Killarney.
And then….it’s time for Mike’s Birthday Celebration! What better way to celebrate than pints and songs in an authentic Irish Pub!
Day 4 – Tuesday, September 13: This morning we are off to Blarney to visit Blarney Castle and its legendary “Blarney Stone”. For those daring enough to ascend the castle’s narrow steps to the summit, a kiss on the stone guarantees one “the gift of gab”. The surround gardens and castle grounds are spectacular, and the nearby Blarney Woolen Mills offers some of the best
shopping for Irish gifts on our tour. We return to Killarney for an afternoon of free time. One may Choose to rake a tour of the countryside on one of Killarney’s famous horse drawn “jaunting carts”, take a cruise on the lake at Ross Castle or simply relax in one of the city’s many Irish pubs. Tonight you will be on your own for dinner, but then it is showtime with Mike Blakely y los Yahoos!
Day 5 – Wednesday, September 14: Our destination this morning is to one of the breathtaking sites in all of Ireland… the Cliffs of Moher. This sheer rock wall of cliffs, towering 650 feet up from the Atlantic, extend for 8 miles along the Irish coast. Even when seen through a foggy mist created by Atlantic gales, the cliffs provide the visitor with an unforgettable experience! After lunch near the cliffs we are heading for County Galway to the city of Galway where we will spend tonight. Galway is a beautiful coastal town on the banks of the Corrib River. The narrow, winding streets of this once walled city offer a variety of shops, pubs and historic sites. At the city docks, one may view a Galway hooker, the small wooden sailing boats featured on their city’s coat of arms and once used to ferry peat, cattle and beer along the coast. Dinner will be on your own.
Day 6 – Thursday, September 15: We are headed to the charming town of Clifden where we will be staying for the next two nights at the Station House Hotel. A group dinner will be at the hotel tonight.
Day 7 – Friday, September 16: Our morning begins with a short drive to Kylemore Abbey . Built between 1863 and 1868 by Manchester tycoon, Henry Mitchell, this lakeside castle is a Gothic Revival fantasy of romantic charm. Henry sold the castle shortly after the sudden death f his wife in 1875. The castle became an abbey during World War I when the Benedictine nuns, fleeing from war-torn Belgium, arrived here. Today the nuns run the abbey. We return to Clifden for an afternoon of free time and to get ready for Mike Blakely y los Yahoos to perform tonight. Dinner will be on your own.
Day 8 – Saturday, September 17: As we leave Clifden we head to Limerick where we will spend our last night in Ireland at the Strand Hotel. We have our farewell dinner at the hotel tonight before packing up and leaving bright and early the next morning for the U.S.
Day 9 – Sunday, September 18: Return home to U.S.
